COPPER RIVER LODGE
ALASKA, UNITED STATES
The Copper River flows into Alaska's famous Iliamna Lake which is renowned for some of the largest rainbows in the State and the Copper River Lodge is the only lodge located on the river itself.
If you have never been to Alaska this is one of the best lodges to visit. The Copper River is one of Alaska's most consistent rainbow fisheries and it was Alaska's first fly fishing only catch and release regulated river. The season here runs from June 8 to early October and unlike other tundra rivers in Alaska that offer fly fishing for large trout, the Copper River runs through a scenic river valley which, aside from making it one of the more picturesque rivers in the state, also offers guests refuge from the relentless northern winds.
One of the things that distinguishes this lodge from others in Alaska is that only 6 guests are booked at a time, making for very personable service. This lodge has rustic accommodations, nothing fancy here, but you will find everything you need. The lodge has 4 heated rooms for 6 guests and each room has a single and double bed. Bathrooms and the shower/sauna house are shared.
Most lodges in Alaska run on an 8-5 day but this lodge runs from 9 am until 7pm because the early evening often presents the best fishing of the day and it is often a spectacular time for viewing wildlife. The guides pack a picnic lunch for guests which is usually eaten on the river but if the weather turns ugly guests might be able to talk the guides into returning to the lodge to warm up.
The lodge uses 16' boats with 40 hp jet units to run the river but guests rarely, if ever, fish from the boat. The Copper River is a perfect river for wading so boats are used only as a means to get from pool to pool. Boats return to the lodge at 7pm and dinner is served family style at 8pm. The lodge has a sauna that guests often enjoy after a hard day of fishing.
