The Upper Credit

No Comments Uncategorized

Today is the 12th anniversary of the doors opening at WILSON’S so happy birthday to us ! It truly is hard to believe that it has been 12 years. Time flies… (sorry for the pun). To celebrate the store’s anniversary everything on the shelves is 20% off (yup, everything) until this coming Saturday so if you need anything now would be a great time to pay us a visit !

I mentioned the other day that in preparation for the coming trout opener we have been scouting new water. I spent last Saturday on the Upper Credit between the Grange Sideroad and Terra Cotta with two friends, Gary Prenevost and Gord Miller. Gary was in his Scadden inflatable that he purchased in our store last year [and wanted me to tell everyone that if you get a boat MAKE SURE you buy the portaging wheel or your life will be hell]. Gord was in the canoe with me cracking jokes about my paddling prowess for 4 hours – and rightfully so. In preparation for our trip I had printed aerial photos off of GoogleEarth and sat in the bow with my camera and a pen circling new pools on the pictures that formed over the winter and we are all looking forward to casting a fly into them in the coming weeks.

By the way, if you have not fished the Credit River south of the Grange Sideroad, do yourself a favour and go. Perhaps the easiest access is by way of the trail in from the pedestrian overpass on Hurontario just south of Ken Whillans Conservation Area. At this point the river is about a 7 minute walk from the highway and there are some new pools north of the bridge towards the Grange and south of the bridge towards Inglewood that have formed as a result of trees falling in the river. These new pools are in addition to the better known pools that many of us already know, including the local kids from Inglewood who have them earmarked as the best ones for swimming – so be careful on your back cast in the coming months…

Although we got snowed on during much of our trip the water level on the Credit River is down significantly from this time than in previous years and I fear that without significant rainfall fly fishing in Southern Ontario this year is going to be adversely affected. Unfortunately these conditions are not unique to the Credit…

I was speaking with another friend last night who spent the day on the Maitland yesterday and he reports that steelhead are in the river but the water level there is also down significantly. The fish are laying in the deeper pools waiting for a rise in water which we hope comes sooner rather than later (preferable Monday through Friday…).
