In a word: YES!

Temperatures on the upper reach are perfect. Water clarity is excellent, Hendricksons are still coming off and we are seeing some craneflies, grey foxes and the beginning of a tan caddis hatch. Tell your boss you are not feeling well and you need to go home… and if he/she falls for it stop into WILSON’S Fergus at 105 Queen Street West to say hello!

We are now 2 weeks into trout season in southern Ontario and many anglers are scratching their heads because of the weather we have had wondering what flies to use and where they should be fishing. We are pleased to be able to report that the Grand River is getting back to seasonal norms in terms of flow and we can also tell you that hatches are at least a week to 10 days ahead of historic norms. Some of the regular readers of this blog may also be wondering why we have not been posting on a more regular basis and the reason is we have been up to our a$$ in alligators with the opening of our Fergus store. During this period we have been doing some employee training and part of that training has included how to access this blog and write entries. In the grand scheme of things we will admit that writing the blog has been put on the back burner but our new life with a second store to look after is starting to settle into a manageable pattern and you will see us returning to more regular entries shortly.

In the category of “One step forward, two steps back…” We are now in week two since we opened our fly shop in Fergus and every time we think the ‘to do’ list is getting shorter we remember another item or two that needs to be taken care of. Those of you who have kindly taken a moment to drop in to say hello will already know that we have held off ramping up our inventory beyond what it is (which, by the way, is more fly fishing inventory than Fergus has seen in quite some time) because we have not had security bars in the windows. That situation has now been rectified and our next pile of boxes full of goodies is due in Fergus next week. In the interim we have been doing a LOT of listening to what customers have been telling us and we have been taking more than a handful of notes.

So what is coming down the pipe? Well, first and foremost we have our website team working on a new landing page for the Fergus store and we are editing our current website to reflect our new staff, our fly fishing schools and our impressive fly fishing guide program. We are also finalizing some pretty cool contests that are going to be a great reason for people to drop into the store and continuing to tie up the loose ends. Stay tuned…

Tomorrow is the beginning of the 2012 trout season here in Ontario and we want to pause to appreciate where we have come from and what lies ahead. We began our 15th year in business last week, we now have a second store in Fergus and this marks our 1,200th post on our blog. Any one of these occasions in our books is worth celebrating but we think the fact that they are all happening at the same time is pretty cool. Frankly, it boggles my mind that I have sat at a computer 1,200 times to type an entry onto this blog but it boggles my mind even more that WILSON’S is now in its 15th year of business. It seems like only yesterday that my parents (both now deceased), the rest of my family and my friends all gathered at our original location in downtown Toronto to celebrate the opening of our fly shop back in April 1998. That said, what completely blows me away is that we now have a second store in Fergus on the banks of the Grand River. To be honest opening a second store in Fergus is something I have dreamed about for years but in the category of “careful what you wish for” it is now a reality and our whole team is scrambling because we didn’t have time to properly prepare for it. In one sense this new store scares the heck out of us but we realize that had we not acted on it as quickly as we did someone else would likely have done so and the opportunity would have been lost – forever. So, after speaking with our families, our customers and our conscience, we took a deep breath and took the plunge. We have not yet resurfaced – and likely won’t for some time – but the shot of adrenalin we have taken through opening our second store in Fergus is keeping us on our toes!

I personally look back on the years since WILSON’S first opened with mixed emotions. Much has happened in those years on both a professional and personal level and to be honest I would not change any of it – even the dark times. I was 35 years old when I decided that I would open the kind of fly shop I wanted to find as someone new to the sport and while I am probably more surprised than anyone that 15 years later we are still around I am also proud of what we have built. I think the only reason why we are still here after the ups and downs we have experienced is simply because it is still enjoyable. If we take a step back we also realize that what makes working in a fly shop enjoyable is all of the customers we meet on a daily basis who share our passion for fly fishing. We realize there are very few people who are able to say they love what they do and we are fortunate to be part of that club.

We have had many people work in the store over the years – both good and bad – and we have learned much from each of them. Some of this learning was related to fly fishing, some of it was related to business and some of it was related to, well, let’s just say it is related to how some people choose to live their lives. Until recently, our friend Eli Garrett held the record for being the longest serving employee of WILSON’S. We appreciate Eli’s loyalty as much as his honesty and hard work and always enjoy seeing him at industry functions. Eli’s record was recently surpassed by Vasilios “Bill” Katraouras who manages our Toronto store. You could not ask for a better person to have behind the counter in a fly shop and Bill’s thoughtful words and actions make being a part of the team at WILSON’S fun.

We truely have a team working at WILSON’S and each one plays an important role in helping make our fly shop a business. Hugo Ma, John Lambert, Danny Desiato and Sheldon Seale are all equally passionate about fly fishing and each brings a special skill set that makes our team better with them on board. To that end, If you are not aware our rogues gallery now has a second chapter in Fergus headed up by Rob Heal who is managing our new store and heading up our new fly fishing guide and education programs. Rob is one of the most respected and well-liked fly fishing guides in Ontario and we are delighted to have him on our team. Working on a full-time basis with Rob is Mike Pratt who is one of those young guys who you want to find in a fly shop. You know the type: knowledgeable, helpful and full of energy. Jay Mowat and our old friend John Hoffman round out the team at WILSON’S Fergus and we are thrilled that they have agreed to join us.

So here we are. 15 years, 1,200 posts and 2 stores later and we all hope that you like what we are doing as much as we like doing it. We hope you agree we are heading in the right direction but we are always open to any helpful advice you may have so please send us an email with any thoughts you want to pass along. We thank you for your ongoing support and wish everyone tight lines this season!

Today is a special day here at WILSON’S because it is the beginning of our 15th year in business! Our store opened on April 20 1998 at the corner of Wellington and Scott Street in downtown Toronto and it is both ironic and humorous that as we prepare to open our new store in Fergus this Sunday we are experiencing the same trepidation we had all those years ago. What goes around comes around…

We are truely thankful to be some of the lucky few who are involved professionally in the fly fishing retail community and we appreciate the opportunity to meet people on a daily basis who share our passion for the sport. To that end, please join us tomorrow between the hours of 9am and 5pm for the ‘soft’ opening of our new store at 105 Queen Street West, Unit 6 in Fergus We are excited about this next chapter in our history and look forward to sharing it with you!

If you have had occasion to visit the Grand River lately you may have been a bit alarmed by the low level of the water. While discussing this on the WILSON’S Facebook page earlier this week a friend of the store, Dr Ian Martin, was kind enough to point out that Bellwood Lake reservoir is at 80% capacity which is normal for this time of year and no cause for concern. Ian explained that the GRCA keeps the reservoir at this level during the spring in order to have enough extra capacity for spring rains that are typical (but, as Ian noted, of course not always guaranteed).

As we continue our preparations for the opening of our new fly shop in Fergus in the coming days we will keep an eye on the river and start posting conditions on our website when the Ontario trout season starts at the end of the month.

Today’s Globe and Mail has an article on the front page of the sports section entitled, “The Rules of Trotz” by Eric Duhatschek and it talks about how Nashville Predators coach BarryvTrotz has built his team into a winner by using sound business techniques and principles. The article lists five basic rules that can apply equally to any business including ours:

1. Help the players get better because it is good for the team;
2. Give the players ownership and listen to their input;
3. When something is broken fix it;
4. Always do the right thing; and,
5. See Rule No. 1.

Not surprisingly these same rules can apply to, say, a fly fishing trade show…:

1. Help the (Forum) get better because it is good for the (fly fishing community);
2. Give the (attendees) ownership and listen to their input;
3. When something is broken fix it;
4. Always do the right thing; and,
5. See Rule No. 1.

Just a thought…

On a business note, we are continuing to set up our store in Fergus this weekend so if you are in the neighbourhood please drop in and say hello! The phone number at our new fly shop is 519-787-3474.

This lecture, linked to the TED site through the Harvard University website, is of author J.K. Rowling giving a 20 minute commencement address to the 2008 graduating class at Harvard. We think the video is worth watching for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the wisdom it conveys. In our specific case, watching this video is also the inspiration our team needs at the moment as we prepare to open our second fly shop. We need a shot in the arm (or arguably, perhaps the head) these days because our Fergus project is a daunting task and its success is not guaranteed.

So why are we doing it? As Ms. Rowling says in her address, “some failure in life is inevitable. It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all – in which case, you fail by default.”

We have done our homework, have hired some great staff and we believe that we are making a good business move from every perspective. But at the end of the day we are opening in Fergus because if we do not at least try to build our business through this opportunity we will regret it for the rest of our lives.

We obviously hope we are making the right decision but only time will tell… Please wish us luck – we look forward to seeing you in Fergus!

I have been watching local chat boards for comments about the Canadian Fly Fishing Forum and one response in particular to a negative comment about the location caught my eye. The initial thread touched on why the event had been held at the Hamilton Convention Centre and questioned the reasons why it had moved that far west. I can tell you the reasons…

A few years ago I was so disappointed with the show as an exhibitor that I sought out the President of the Izaak Walton Club after the event to impress upon him the importance of changing the venue so the show could grow. I was told in no uncertain terms that because the show was profitable for the club the organizing committee at the time was not interested in making any changes. After explaining to him that the majority of the exhibitors felt the show was on the verge of collapse and were not interested in returning unless improvements were made – starting with a better venue – he explained the rational behind the Club’s preference to stand pat was simply because there was no other venue in which to move at an affordable price. His final comment (I am fairly certain out of exasperation) was something along the lines of, “Go ahead and find a venue if you think you can but we don’t think there is one out there.” So I started asking people on the organizing committee and, more importantly, other exhibitors what criteria would make for a better show and I was told the following:

1. Accessibility for the majority of attendees
2. Venue size (both floor plate and ceiling height)
3. Availability of seminar rooms
4. Immediate hotel accommodation
5. Dinner venue at the facility
6. Parking
7. Affordability

There were other less important criteria given such as ease of set up for exhibitors but I focused on the above critical items and decided that if no one else was going to find a better venue I would do it myself. So over the proceeding year and a half during my normal course of business whenever I had a few moments I visited every hotel and conference facility between Pearson Airport and Kitchener that I thought might offer a better solution. It is worth noting that as I visited potential venues I shared my findings with other exhibitors to get their feedback because I wanted to make sure I would not be perceived to be steering the decision in any way. As an aside I can now say without reservation that if you do a search on Googlemaps for “conference facilities” you will come up with a surprisingly long list of facilities which have no business being included on the the list such as the cesspool of a hotel located near the racetrack in Campbellville. What goes on in the minds of the owners of these facilities is puzzling to say the least but such is the wonder of online search tags!

If you overlay the 7 criteria listed above on the search results from Google you come with a manageable list and if you visit every facility as I did you will come to the same conclusion: the best venue is the Hamilton Convention Centre and it is so for a number of reasons – not the least of which is price. Think what you will but this venue is more central to the vast majority of fly anglers than any other. The venue also has the ceiling height necessary for an indoor casting lane (that for the record is VERY difficult to find). It is one of the few venues with seminar rooms contiguous to the exhibitor hall and one of fewer still with a hotel nearby (in this case it is attached to the convention centre). On top of the above the Hamilton Convention Centre has plentiful inexpensive parking and FREE parking options within an easy walk of the door for those who prefer to not pay the $8 it cost for the day in the Convention Centre’s parking facility. Perhaps most importantly, the Hamilton Convention Centre is incredibly affordable and the staff are very accommodating.

The Forum venue did not change because of my efforts. It changed because of the efforts of Sheldon Seale and the rest of the Izaak Walton Club who voted for change and I thank them for stepping outside of their comfort zone this year. The new venue put the Forum back on the right path and it deserves our support. We now have to focus on giving those who complain about the distance they have to travel a good reason to attend in future. Some in the fly fishing community are professional complainers who like to stir the pot and I respectfully suggest that if they are not willing to help implement the change they are so vocal about wanting to see it is time for them to stop criticizing those who are volunteering their time and effort to help.

We need your help to make the 2013 Forum a success so please contact the club and offer to volunteer for a committee. It is fun to get involved and a great way to meet the members of the local fly fishing community. Anyone can complain – that is the easy thing to do – but it is time to put up or shut up…
