Each Labor Day weekend, the village of Telluride, Colorado triples in size as people flock to the Telluride Mountain Film Festival. Like its cousins in Banff and Toronto, the TFF chooses a number of films to headline the festival and this year one of those chosen was by Felt Soul Media.

“Eastern Rises” is simply fly fishing cinematography at its best…

2011 Fly Tying Courses & Open Vice Table on Saturdays !

No Comments Uncategorized

WILSON’S is pleased to announce that Sheldon Seale has joined our team as our in-house fly tying instructor. Knowledgeable, friendly, a patient teacher and a consummate team player, Sheldon is a welcome addition to our team. Sheldon is a past president of the Izaak Walton Fly Fishing Club, a contributing editor to Canadian Fly Fisher magazine and a well known fixture in the national fly fishing community. He will be teaching our beginner and advanced courses and we are signing students up for courses beginning this month. As in previous years, our fly tying classes are held in the store on Saturday mornings from 9:30 until 12:20 and the cost is $50 per session plus applicable taxes. Classes are restricted to 6 people per session so please email the store to reserve your spot as soon as possible. We will be publishing a full course outline on our site very shortly.

Once you have taken the beginner’s course you can join Sheldon and learn to tie some of his favourite dry fly patterns for the Grand River and Credit River. From the Hendrickson’s to the last of the emerging Caddis, Sheldon will teach you the patterns you need for every major hatch including mayflies, caddis and crane flies as well as a couple of terrestrials for those days when nothing else seems to work. By scaling the patterns and changing the material colours, you will be able to adapt these patterns to many of the insects in the Grand.

NOTE: After each class we are hosting open vice fly tying sessions for customers every Saturday afternoon through the winter. Watch our site for details on guest tyers !

Where Do You Go After Fly Fishing ?

No Comments Uncategorized

Last month Outdoor Life magazine ran an article on the 25 best fishing bars in the United States and to our shock the article strongly intimated that bars and fishing share a common client basis (ok, we’re not really that shocked). We got to wondering what bars/restaurants and Inns in Southwestern Ontario might qualify for a similar list in our books. Obviously any list is subjective but in the interest of doing our little bit for public service we thought we would share some of the venues that have been recommended to us:

Beaver River
The Dam Pub
53 Bruce Street
Thornbury, N0H 2P0
(519) 599-2110
thedampub.com
*With 300 single malts behind the bar this Scottish pub is notable for more than its location…

Bighead River
The Fall’s Inn
113 Robert St (140 Front St W)
Walter’s Falls, N0H 2S0
1-866-204-0814
thefallsinn.com
*A hidden gem in the Grey Highlands with a great restaurant.

Boyne River
Mrs. Mitchell’s Restaurant
R.R.#4
Shelburne, Ontario, Canada L0N 1S8
(519) 925-362
mrsmitchells.com
*There is easy access to the Boyne River at the parking lot off Prince of Wales Road north of Hwy 89 and this restaurant is about 6 km east. Open for lunch and dinner, you will wonder why you haven’t eaten here before!

Credit River
Belfountain Inn
792 Forks of Credit Road
Caledon L0N 1B0
(519) 927-9219
*This is a small restaurant/bar that is a popular spot for locals and anglers who frequent the Forks of the Credit (and if you are heading up early a great place for breakfast on the weekends is Flapjacks on Highway 10 just north of the Grange Side Road).

Grand River
The Breadalbane Inn
487 St. Andrew St. West,
Fergus N1M 1P2
Toll Free: 1.888.842.2825
breadalbaneinn.com
*This Inn is convenient to the Grand River and has a great pub with excellent food.

Mad River
Chez Michel Restaurant
150 Mill St, Creemore, ON L0M 1G0
(705) 466-3331 ?
chezmichel.ca
*The Mad is often overlooked because it is located ‘just’ beyond what many anglers are willing to drive for a day but those who do are rewarded handsomely. This is one of a handful of restaurants in the town of Creemore that offer great food and a selection of beers that begin oddly enough with… Creemore Lager.

Maitland River
Benmiller Inn
81175 Benmiller Line,
Goderich N7A 3Y1
(519) 524-2191
benmillerinnandspa.com
*A favorite of local guide Mike Verhoef (www.flyfitters.ca), and for good reason.

Saugeen River
Walker’s Landing Pub & Eatery
308 Durham E,
Walkerton, N0G 2V0
(519) 881-3444
*Located in downtown Walkerton on the way to/from the boat launch

These are just a few of the places recommended to us and we will appreciate receiving your advice on where to stop in for a meal when out for a day on the water… and no, Tim Horton’s doesn’t qualify.
