I have a friend who is an avid angler and she once admitted to me with a bit of embarrassment that in the middle of the winter she sometimes finds herself taking her fly rods out of their tubes and just looking at them. When she told me this I smiled knowingly because, well, I get it.

Standing along the banks of the Credit River does the same thing to me…

Many anglers who read our blog are familiar with the Forks of the Credit River and if you have not been there it is worth the trip. The Forks of the Credit Road runs along the Credit River and hairpins up the Niagara Escarpment offering an opportunity to imagine you are nestled in the Adirondack Mountains and I believe it is one of the prettiest places to fly fish in southern Ontario. Unfortunately because the road is scenic and twisting it is also a popular road for motorcycle enthusiasts. The Region of Peel has almost daily complaints from residents who live there about motorcyclists using the road as a race track. Unfortunately a fairly significant number of those riders lose control of their bikes on one turn in particular because sand washes down from the hill (I have witnessed one of these accidents). I do not ride myself and I have nothing against motorcyclists who obey the law but I take exception to idiocy wherever I see it regardless of it being on 2 wheels, 4 wheels or on foot. Stupid is as stupid does. So how does Mr. Cheney factor into this?

Peter Cheney writes a column in the Globe and Mail entitled “Great Roads” which in his words is “intended as an eclectic… valuable, ongoing resource for people who love the road…” His column last week featured the Forks of the Credit and I cannot for the life of me fathom how the Globe and Mail allowed it to be published. Mr. Cheney writes, “The curves (of the Forks of the Credit Road) are nicely cambered, so you can pull some extra Gs, and the corner radiuses vary from long sweepers to tight switchbacks. And there are some cool, undulating hills where you can get light in the seat…”

Pull some G’s and get light in the seat? I have friends who live with children on this road and he is actively encouraging people to break the law on a residential street. Nice bit of journalism there Mr. Cheney. He finishes his article by saying, “Some of my driving friends have sworn off the Forks because they think it’s become too popular and police infested. On a sunny weekend, it can turn into a bit of a Disneyland, but I still go, and sometimes I find myself alone on the Forks, arcing through the corners and remembering why I love to drive. That’s what happens on a great road…”

Police infested? What a knucklehead.

I wonder if he would encourage people to do the same if he lived there…
