Secret Fly Fishing Spots in Ontario

No Comments Uncategorized

One of our regular customers came in the store a while ago with a huge grin on his face and a picture of one of the largest brown trout I have ever heard of being landed in Ontario. Of course I asked him where he caught it and he smiled and said that it was at his ‘secret spot’, and he laughed.

After rubbing it in a bit – or what I thought was a lot – he said that if I don’t tell anyone (where have I heard that one before?), he would disclose the location. After all but swearing on a Bible, he told me where he landed this monster and I my response was, “You’re kidding?”

After he left the store I got to thinking about how many times I had heard about this place but had seldom heard anyone talk about catching browns there, let alone of this size… There is obviously a reason for that !

This episode got me thinking that many of us who live in or near the City view fly fishing in the Greater Toronto Area much like people who live here and don’t visit the main tourist attractions. People come from miles to go up the CN Tower, visit the AGO, see the ROM and simply take in the sights but only a few locals take the time to do those very things – and have a great day when they do. The same can be said for fly fishing in the GTA. Many of us think we have to leave the area for good fly fishing but those of us who do our homework are rewarded for our efforts.

As far as our customer’s ‘secret spot’, all we will say is this: I am a man of my word. What I will say is that this place is in the eastern side of the 905 belt, it is possible to get there by public transit – and one of the new fishing maps that will be posting in the coming weeks will show the area (but as promised we won’t point out his spot !)
