Fly fishers in Ontario spend a significant part of the year staring at ice-covered rivers and lakes pining for the spring. Opportunities to fly fish are not always physically available year round in our neck of the woods so when the summer weather finally warms up it is hard to keep many of us at work. That said, Southern Ontario is in the midst of one of the warmest spells in years and part of being a responsible angler is recognizing when you should not head out on the water. If you are planning to fly fish for cold water species we encourage you to take a break from angling this week. Fish are already under significant pressure from the weather and landing healthy fish in this heat will certainly increase mortality rates.
Taking a break from fishing this week won’t kill you – but heading out might kill the fish. Know when to not go.
