Many fly fishers from beginners to experts often have difficulty catching fish on a fly – not because are using the wrong fly but rather because they are using it improperly. In addition, many fly fishers simply do not know what fly to use and others do not know how to properly tie flies to increase their chances of catching fish.
In response to being asked more than a few times if we could offer an introductory course in entomology WILSON’S is pleased to be offering what we hope will be our first of many Beginner Entomology Courses on Saturday November 21st from 10 am until 1 pm. We are also very pleased that Ian Martin, the author of “Fly Fishing the Grand River” will be teaching the course and, oddly enough, it will focus on the Grand River. The price of this course is $50 per person and seating is limited so please call or email our store to reserve your spot as soon as possible (*payment in full is required).
If you do not know, Ian Martin was born in Waterloo in 1955 and began fly tying and fly fishing at age 14 when to his chagrin he found he could not catch a rising trout on a hook baited with balogna. Soon afterwards he went legit, took up fly fishing and began teaching a popular fly tying course for the community recreation department in Kitchener. Starting with southern Ontario rivers such as the Grand and the Credit, Ian has since fished wherever he has found water and particularly enjoys chasing trout, salmon, and steelhead. Ian was a founding member (and is now a Life Member) of the Kitchener Waterloo Fly Fishers’ Club and today serves as vice-president of the conservation group “Friends of the Grand River” based in Fergus . His interest in aquatic environments led Ian to complete an M.Sc. (Univ. Toronto 1982) and Ph.D. (Univ. Waterloo 1989) in stream insect ecology and gave him the background to write the Canadian best selling book previously mentioned, “Fly Fishing the Grand River”, with his wife Jane Rutherford who also is a biologist and a professor at Wilfrid Laurier University.
Again, please note that seating for this course is limited so make sure you contact our store as soon as possible to reserve your spot.
