Fly Fishing the Bighead River

No Comments Uncategorized

This afternoon I am driving from Toronto to the Falls Inn in Walter’s Falls where I will meet 9 fellow fly fishers for a weekend exploring the Trout Hollow Trail on the Bighead River. This weekend is the culmination of a few months of planning and our goal is simply to help people explore new water, make new fly fishing friends and enjoy a weekend away without having to spend a king’s ransom.

The Bighead River is a small freestone river with a relatively steep grade that runs from the Niagara Escarpment near Chatsworth to its mouth on Georgian Bay in the town of Meaford. The members of our group have not fished the Bighead and we are taking over the Falls Inn tonight for what we hope will be a great weekend escape. Our itinerary is as follows:

After checking in tonight we will meet in the lounge of the Inn for a presentation by a local guide and receive maps and detailed aerial photographs of the river on which members of the group can mark pools and take notes throughout the day. We will divide the river into 4 ‘beats’ and each team of anglers will be assigned a starting point from which they will begin fly fishing tomorrow morning at 7 am. After each 3 hour period each angler will move to the next beat as the day progresses. The Inn is providing box lunches so anglers can fish through the afternoon and we will cast our last fly at 7 pm before returning to the Inn to get cleaned up and meet in the dining room for a group dinner at 7:30. Over dinner we will discuss the experiences of each attendee and compare notes on what flies and techniques did and did not work. On Sunday morning we will get up at our leisure to fly fish before returning to the Inn for brunch at 11 am and then get cleaned up before check out at 1 pm.

The total cost of this weekend for each angler is $450 and this covers 2 nights at the Falls Inn, all meals and taxes. To put this into perspective, the total cost of this weekend is less than you would pay at many fly fishing lodges for a single day of fishing. We want to keep the price of this weekend inexpensive so as many anglers as possible can join us to experience new water, make new friends and have fun.

This is the first time we have tried this kind of gathering and we are delighted that 9 anglers have signed up ! Our hope is that not only will this become the basis for more weekend fly fishing trips to bed & breakfasts and Inns on other rivers in Ontario but also destinations in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Quebec and New York. It looks like the weather is going to cooperate in the coming days and we hope the fish and water levels do so as well !

If you are interested in participating in our “fly fishing Bed & Breakfast weekends” please send us an email so we can add you to our distribution list for future trips.
