Fly Fishing Off the Beaten Track in Ontario

No Comments Uncategorized

There are two days left until the opening of trout season in Ontario and many of us are wondering where to go. If you are looking to do some fly fishing a bit off the beaten track you should check out the Beaver River. This river is one of the prettiest in Southern Ontario and, while relatively short, it has some of the best fly fishing for Brook Trout, Brown, Steelhead and Salmon in the Georgian Bay basin.

The majority of anglers that fish this river gather at the mouth in Thornbury below the dam to fish for Rainbows, Brown Trout and Chinook Salmon during the spring and fall runs but there are great opportunities for excellent Brook Trout and Brown Trout fishing in the upper reaches of the river. That said it is important to note that because of the dense underbrush in the headwaters the Beaver is not for the faint of heart – this river can be very challenging but the rewards will be worth the effort !

If you are heading up to the Beaver we highly recommend making a weekend of it and staying at the Jasper Stuart House at 235299 Grey Rd. 13 in Kimberley (www.bbcanada.com/jasperstuarthouse) and if would like a map of the Beaver River showing access points and a copy of the Hatch chart they can be found on our blog – tight lines !
