Fly Fishing & Ego Don’t Mix

No Comments Uncategorized

One of the things I have learned over the years is that a lot of anglers in Ontario miss out on great fishing because of their ego. As many of us know there are a handful of fly fishing destination mainstays in Ontario that we are fortunate to have including the Credit, Ganaraska, Grand, Maitland, Niagara, Nottawasaga and Saugeen. The quality of fly fishing on these waters is well documented but there are innumerable tributaries on these rivers and other lesser known watersheds that offer truly wonderful experiences – if you do your homework. For example, I was driving down from Bruce County yesterday and decided to take the back roads and stop at every bridge to take the water temperature and check out the conditions. Sure enough, I found myself exploring some great brook trout water with the enthusiasm of a 9 year old and what is normally a 3 hour drive on crowded highways turned into a relaxing 6 hour drive in the country frequently interrupted by landing a beautiful brookie.

I like exploring new areas to fly fish because the purpose of my day isn’t focussed on landing the biggest or most fish but rather enjoying the day. I have heard more than one customer over the years express disappointment at their day of fishing because they didn’t land anything ‘worthy’ of their time on the water. Every time I hear this I think to myself they don’t really get it. It’s not all about the results. Fly fishing is about the experience. Truth be told, the drive back to Toronto yesterday was one of the most relaxing I have ever taken.

And if you’re wondering, there are a few great spots on West Back Line and Shaw’s Creek Road…
