Canadian Cane is a gathering every other year (odd numbered years) of bamboo rod builders held at Bellwood Lake Conservation Area in Fergus, Ontario. If you are not aware a rod builders gathering is an informal conclave where builders, aspiring builders and enthusiastic non-builders meet and share ideas and techniques. Canadian Cane started in the mid 1990’s and their meeting is the only gathering of bamboo rod makers in Eastern Canada. The next gathering of Canadian Cane is May 28-29, 2011 and the theme of this year’s gathering is the E.F. Payne Rod Company.
The weekend consists of seminars, presentations and demonstrations with lunch provided on both days and a casual supper on Saturday evening. There is a casting pond at the venue to try out bamboo rods and for those that want to get in some fly fishing the Grand River is next door!
The organizers of this event have confirmed that Jed Dempsey, a former employee of the Payne Rod shop is attending as is Chet Croco, owner of Genuine Bellinger who is attending his third Canadian Cane. In addition, Andy Royer, the “Bamboo Broker” himself and the star of “Trout Grass” (a DVD chronicling the harvest and distribution of tonkin cane for the bamboo rodmaking community) will be attending so mark your calenders for this event!
Other scheduled speakers include Tim Abbott, Ron Barch, author Kathy Scott and New England rod maker Dave VanBurgel. Ted and Nancy Clarke of Clarke’s Angling Collectibles will also be attending the gathering with some of their collectible tackle and books for sale.
