An Old Friend…

No Comments Uncategorized

I picked up the paper at my front door when I got up yesterday morning and thought, “It’s time for a road trip to see an old friend I haven’t visited for a while…”

The drive up the 410 from Highway 401 can range from being a breeze to an assault on my senses. The traffic was surprisingly busy but not cramped and I was able to make my way across Mayfield to Hurontario without too much difficulty. As I swung north on Highway 10 my anticipation increased ever so slightly and when I saw the Oak Ridges Moraine on the horizon I couldn’t help but smile. I was getting nearer.

I drove north past the bass ponds in the Ken Whillans Conservation Area and pulled off Hurontario onto the Grange Sideroad and headed west. In the distance I could see the familiar jog in the road and slowed as I drove over the bridge and smiled again as I saw the sun reflect off of the water below as it made its way through the valley towards Lake Ontario. I turned north on McLaughlin Road and drove over another bridge and then slowed to a stop and turned onto the Forks of the Credit Road. I was surprised to see the construction underway on the road but pleased to see it is being done as this stretch of asphalt gets more than its fair share of traffic through the year. Turning left, I was mindful of my speed because at this time of year the OPP often set up speed traps at McLaren Road to catch speeding motorcyclists who flock to the area. I continued past the entrance to the Caledon Mountain Trout Club and made my way back across the Credit River and followed its banks upriver.

I smiled as I neared the Forks of the Credit because this stretch of river to me is like an old friend who I can go without seeing for months and then suddenly get back in touch with like no time has passed between us. There are very few places on this earth that make me feel welcome and comfortable – the Forks of the Credit is one of those places. We spent the day getting reacquainted and I made my way back into the city late in the evening, happier for having made the trip…
