Congratulations to The Organizers of the Grand River Spey Clave

No Comments Uncategorized

If you were one of approximately 200+ people who attended the Grand River Spey Clave in Paris Ontario yesterday I trust you were as impressed as I was with the event. For those anglers who did not attend – you missed what is likely one of the best spey claves in Canada. I know from the number of spey rods we sell in the store that the level of interest in spey fishing within the Southern Ontario fly fishing community is growing but I was still surprised by the level of attendance. No doubt the weather helped make the day but the clave was a success by any measure ! A special thank you to Simon Gawesworth, Neil Houlding, Courtney Ogilvie, Peter Charles, Rick Whorwood, Bruce Kruk and Larry Halyk who generously volunteered their time and expertise.

Randy Wilson and his organizing team did an excellent job and we would like to thank them for their efforts – well done !

Very Best,

Jim Wilson

Grand River Spey Clave – Saturday May 30, 9am to 4pm

Simply put, if you are an avid fly fisher and are not planning on attending this event, change your plans ! This is a great event that will teach you more in a day than you will learn in a month of classes. The Clave will be held at Bean Park in Paris on the banks of the Grand River.

There will be demonstrations and instruction in traditional, skagit and scandinavian spey techniques. If you have any questions please contact Randy Wilson C-519-497-9731 (randyflyfisher@rogers.com) or see the event webpage: www.grandriverspey.ca/

What Do You Look For in a Fishing Lodge ?

No Comments Uncategorized

Other than the fact that we all want to visit as many fly fishing lodges in our lifetimes as possible, the ingredients of a trip can vary as greatly as the reasons for choosing a destination. The primary factors for any trip include amongst others the quality of fishing available, type of accommodation, accessibility of the lodge, travel time required, scenery, amenities, remoteness & safety, experience of the guides and the quality of the food. The list of factors is indeed endless and the weight an angler puts on each differs from one person to the next.

For example, some anglers may be adverse to daily fly outs because of weak bladders (trust us, it comes up in conversation) and others are rightfully concerned about the huge difference between fishing for trout out of a freight canoe anchored in the middle of a river versus a walk & wade and having to climb over boulders. The secret to making good recommendations on any trips is properly qualifying destinations and clients because both are sometimes caught hyping their abilities (I know, hard to believe…). Accordingly, we are careful to do as much research as possible including visits where and when possible before we promote a destination.

Customers referrals are the chief source of leads for the lodges with which we work but referrals by their nature are subjective so we try to gather as much information on a destination from as many sources as possible. To that end we always appreciate input from our customers and look forward to your comments on what destinations we should be looking at going forward.
