The Election is Over…

The Conservatives are staying in power and I think the country will be better for it.  With the dust quickly settling I hope Mr. Harper’s Goverment will be able to steer the country through the current economic turmoil relatively unscathed so we can all start to focus on more important matters – fishing !

WILSON’S Caledon – Season is Wrapping Up

No Comments Uncategorized

As many of you know we opened a new satellite shop this year at 1587 Forks of the Credit Road in Caledon. We did this for 2 reasons: first, we can’t count the number of times our customers have told us they got to the Credit and realized they had run out of tippit, leaders and/or didn’t have the right flies.  Secondly, the Belfountain Hatchery, located just upstream from our shop, has now been stocking fish for a few years and the quality of the fishery has jumped significantly.  Accordingly, we thought that opening up a satellite shop was something we should look at for our customers.

WILSON’S Caledon is located just downstream from the Dominion Street bridge in a small building that has been a landmark gracing the banks of the river since 1927.   During that time it has variously been a gas station, a coffee shop and a souveneir store but since it was originally opened it has been best known for selling ice cream.  In fact, we were told in no uncertain terms by the local residents when we were preparing to open that discontinuing the ice cream would be a major disappointment to people from across southern Ontario who have for generations frequented the area on weekends.  So, who were we to argue ?  We became Ontario’s first ice cream & fly shop…  Want a double scoop of Wooly Buggar ?

WILSON’S Caledon was open May, June, September and October from 10 am to 6 pm on Saturdays and Sundays and we extended the hours to include Thursdays and Fridays in July and August.  As luck would have it, the weather in southern Ontario this year conspired against the fly fishing community with many of the rivers getting blown out for much of the season.  However, those few who persevered on the Upper Credit discovered that fishing  conditions combined with the stocking program at the Belfountain Hatchery produced one of the best seasons in years.  In fact, with the fishing season at the Forks now closed until the end of April we are already looking forward to next year !

As the temperatures cool, the autumn leaves begin their annual show and the threat of morning frost looms ever closer, the focus in the river valley has turned from fly fishing to fall walks and we are preparing to close the door on the first full season of WILSON’S Caledon.  That said, this past Thanksgiving weekend proved to be the busiest of the year with over 600 people (!) coming through the doors.  If the weather and the leaves cooperate we will remain open for at least one more weekend for – you guessed it – people making their annual trip to the Forks for the fall colours and, of course, their traditional ice cream cone…  Thank you for your patronage this year at WILSON’S Caledon and your comments on what we might do to improve in 2009 !
